Protection of Beneficiaries and Members of the Community

  • Level 3: As part of his or her duties, the incumbent will be required to visit programs and be in contact with children and/or vulnerable adults.
  • Therefore, a criminal record check or presentation of a certificate of good character will be required.
  • In situations where it is not possible to provide a criminal record or a certificate of good morals and morals, a sworn statement will be requested.

Mission

  • Under the supervision of the Head of Mission, the Grants Manager is responsible for implementing the funding strategy in line with ALIMA’s country action plan.
  • More specifically, they are responsible for mobilizing funding that will allow the implementation of projects.
  • They maintain regular relations with donors, and conduct an active search for funding.
  • They are the guarantor of the drafting of project proposals and reports to donors. They support the monitoring of contractual donor indicators, in collaboration with the Project Coordinators and the Medical Coordinator.

Tasks and Responsibilities
Definition and Monitoring of the Country Development Strategy:

  • The Grants Manager carries out an analysis of donor strategy and the availability of funding for the country concerned, in order to maintain a high level of information and understanding of the issues.
  • They identify funding needs for the mission in collaboration with the coordination team and propose a relevant funding strategy for the mission.
  • They assess the issues and propose the adaptation of the strategy according to the operational action plan of the country. During the mission, the Grants Manager monitors the financing strategy and adapts it according to changing needs.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Mission and the Regional Grants Coordinator at headquarters, they support the design and implementation of a strategy for acquiring grants and mobilizing resources

Maintenance of the relationship with donors:

  • In conjunction with the Head of Mission, they ensure representation with donors and negotiate funding for ALIMA projects.
  • They maintain relations with the donors who finance the projects to ensure regular quality communication.
  • They coordinate the visit of donors to projects when the security situation allows it, with the support of the Head of Mission.

Business Development & Grants Prospection:

  • The Grants Manager, in support of the Head of Mission, conducts an active search for funding and identifies new donors to approach in order to ensure good knowledge of ALIMA and the projects implemented by its staff.
  • They actively monitor the thematic priorities of donors and funding mechanisms in the country.
  • They carry out donor mapping and intelligence gathering, and regularly informs the country coordination on this subject.
  • They develop project presentations and brochures to ensure institutional communication throughout the year

Supports to operational planning in line with donor and funding priorities:

  • The Grants Manager supports the Project Coordinators and the coordination team in the design of interventions in line with the donors’ strategy.
  • They ensure that the interventions are aligned with the thematic and operational priorities of the donors, and that the submissions respect the formats required by the latter.

Production of concepts notes and project proposals:

  • In order to obtain funding, the Grants Manager is responsible for submitting concept notes and project proposals within the deadlines imposed by the donors. They ensure the writing of project documents to respond to opportunities with donors.
  • They guarantee the quality and conformity of the documents produced.

Disseminates key information on donor procedures, funding contracts and supports Project Coordinators in monitoring contractual requirements:

  • The Grants Manager is responsible for updating the coordination team on donor guidelines. They continually inform the teams of the evolution of donor procedures and requirements.
  • In addition, the Grants Manager supports the Project Coordinators in monitoring the contractual requirements of donors.
  • The Grants Manager monitors operational developments, including budgetary, in order to propose contractual modifications if necessary.

Data tracking to meet reporting requirements:

  • The Grants Manager develops and incorporates solid elements of monitoring and follow-up in the reports in the project monitoring tools and therefore participates, with the Data Manager and the Medical Coordinator, in the control and compilation of operational data.
  • They ensure the updating of data monitoring tools in connection with financing contracts, and anticipate the deadlines of reports in order to ensure the completeness of the data and a quality analysis.

Ensures the production of accurate and analytical narrative reports within the defined deadlines:

  • The Grants Manager is responsible for preparing interim and final reports for donors, according to the reporting formats and rules imposed.
  • They are directly responsible for drafting documents, based on precise, quantitative and qualitative information and capitalized on during the year.
  • They establish regular liaison with the coordinators and project managers and, for the preparation of reports, make the link between the commitments with the donor and the reality of the projects and the land. They ensure compliance with deadlines and are responsible for the quality of reports.

Ensures the contractual management of financing contracts:

  • The Grants Manager is responsible for monitoring financing contracts with donors.
  • They are in direct contact with the national representatives of the lessor for contractual management issues.
  • They make sure to know and respect the procedures of the lessor and that these are known to the rest of the team. For this, they have a common contract monitoring tool that they help update.

Ensures the application of standards in the prevention of abuse:

  • The Donor Relations Manager must participate in training and awareness sessions.
  • They apply the standards relating to the prevention of abuse in all the tasks they undertake (ex: adding the thematic in reports, project proposals, clause on the prevention of abuse, etc).
  • They contribute to creating and maintaining a fulfilling and protective environment.

Experience and Skills

  • You have a Medical Diploma in Health, Master’s Degree in Public Health or Epidemiology related to the position (development studies, public health, international relations, project management, etc.).
  • You have Professional experience in reporting, design and/or project management of at least one year, as well as field experience and Good command of project management tools (project cycle, logical framework, project proposal, reporting, etc.).
  • You have Autonomy, capacity for initiative, ability to work in a team and to communicate

Language:

  • A strong command of both spoken and written English is essential for this position

You Obtain a Teaching Hospital Admission form

  1. School of Nursing is run by a university teaching hospital (TH) except private. Such teaching hospitals will sell admission forms usually every year to admit a new set of students for the new academic session which is always at the beginning of each year.

Let’s quickly delve into University or School of Midwifery
Unfortunately, the RN is not equivalent to BSc Nursing or Degree Nursing. This is the reason why many consider university instead of RN, especially when they are not contented with it. Although, they can use the certificate to work as a staff nurse in any hospital and health center. Therefore:

  1. If you choose to proceed to university after acquiring an RN, you will have to obtain the JAMB Direct Entry form which is necessary, and choose a university of your interest.
  2. If the school offers you admission, that means, you will be admitted to a 200 or 300-level Degree in Nursing; depending on the school policies.
  3. You will spend another 4 or 3 years to complete a BSc. Nursing or Degree in Nursing; after which you’ll be awarded a Registered Midwifery and BSc Nursing or BSN.

Changing From RN to Midwifery (RM)

  1. Another stage after RN at a School of Nursing is called a School of Midwifery. This is administered usually by the same teaching hospital.
  2. If the student prefers this instead of obtaining a JAMB DE form, the student may need to spend another 1 or 2 years after RN for your midwifery course. Then the student will have two certificates altogether – RN and (Registered Midwifery) RM.
  3. The student can also first obtain her Registered Midwifery Certificate, and then apply for Post-Basic Nursing in Schools of Nursing.

Studying Nursing at University Instead Of School Of Nursing

If you must choose a university to study Nursing instead of the School of Nursing/ Midwifery, Below is what your journey will look like:

Obtain Your JAMB Form

  1. The student will have to register for UTME for the admission year, like a Jambite (any other candidate seeking admission) into other courses in different Schools.
  2. The student must score the required mark of his/her proposed school – usually 200 and above, the student then obtains a post-UTME form and takes their post-UTME test where required. Schools like OAU, UI, UNILAG, UNN, BAYERO, ABSU, ABU, IMSU, UNIBEN, UNIZIK, etc conduct post-UTME tests while schools like UNIOSUN, KWASU, etc do not.
  3. If the student eventually gets admitted, the student will be studying the course for 5 years after which the student will be awarded three certificates – RN, RM, and (Bachelor of Nursing) BSN.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • The PFM Specialist will provide technical assistance (TA) and advisory services in relation to the following PFM interventions within the state for which s/he is responsible:

Budget Planning, Administration and Execution:

  • Planning and preparation of budgets that are comprehensive, realistic, credible, and clearly link policies with proposed expenditures;

Internal Controls:

  • Improving the quality and functioning of systems of internal controls in Central Internal Audit Control (CIAD) department/office, including the full adoption of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and the National Chart of Accounts (NCOA). This is to ensure fewer opportunities for fraud, waste, and abuse of public funds, and a reduced chance of negative audit findings; and eventually promote appropriate use of funds leading to improved allocation and expenditure in key sectors of Health, Education, and WASH.

Domestic Resource Mobilization (DRM):

  • Increasing DRM, particularly tax revenues, through the development of Revenue Enhancement/Expansion Strategy, and appropriate policies and a roadmap for implementation of the Strategy; and
  • Encouraging the State Governments and LGAs to spend a significant portion of these increased revenues on the target social service sectors of Education, Health, and WASH.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Strengthening and improving the capacity of government (State and LGAs) to monitor and evaluate both their financial management, procurement and audit functions and the magnitude of impact of resulting improvements to service delivery.

Debt Management:

  • Strengthening and improving the capacity of government (State Debt Management Agency/Department/Office/Unit) to analyze, report, publish, and improve the debt position of the State ensuring adherence to Debt Management and Fiscal Responsibility Laws, and using the Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA)-Debt Management Strategy (DMS), Arrears Clearance Framework (ACF), internal domestic expenditure arrears database, etc.;
  • Supporting in carrying out debt sustainability analysis; and
  • Supporting the monitoring debt position to ensure it is within debt sustainability limit.

Cash/Treasury Management:

  • Supporting in the development of annual budget profiles for the MDAs in the key sectors of Education, Health and WASH; and annual cash plan for the state;

It was reported that a Medical Mystery Unveiled in recent times as DSS shut down a clinic after Alleged Quackery that led to a patient’s death in Jos.

The Department of State Security (DSS) sealed the AL-Ihsan clinic on Sunday, located in the Unguwan Rogo Community in Jos North local government area of Plateau State. This action followed allegations of quackery and the reported death of a patient who underwent treatment at the clinic.

Last week, the death of a woman in the community after a surgery performed by a supposed doctor at the hospital sparked mixed reactions, with many attributing the death to the procedure, raising concerns about the medical specialty.

Sources from the community confirmed the incident to our correspondent, stating that the DSS’s action was in response to complaints filed by some community members to the state Ministry of Health and the DSS regarding alleged quackery activities at the clinic.

Sadis Albasu, a community member, shed light on the situation, emphasizing the primary reason for sealing the hospital: alleged quackery activities. It came to light after a woman’s death following a surgical procedure performed by a person who lacked the necessary qualifications to practice medicine, let alone perform surgeries.

“A lot of people are complaining, and that’s why the matter was reported to the state Ministry of Health for necessary action,” explained Albasu, noting that the individual in question is currently in school but has been conducting surgeries in the community.

University of Jos Student reported missing following a Dive into Lamingo Dam During Hiking Trip

A tragic incident unfolded as Elvis Yoonpan Jepgwam, a 100-level student of Biology Education at the University of Jos, goes missing during a hike trip at Lamingo Dam on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

The hike, organized by the Biology Education Student Association (BESA), took a devastating turn when Elvis and some other students ventured into the dam for a swim, only for Elvis to tragically fail to resurface.

Despite extensive efforts by local rescue divers throughout the weekend, Elvis remains missing, neither his body has yet to be recovered.

Reports from @PTB suggest lingering superstitions, hinting at rituals needed to appease the water gods for the release of the body.

As of now, media outlets have not confirmed whether Elvis has been found.

A new report confirms that the body of Elvis Yoonpan Jepgwam, a 100-level Biology Education student at the University of Jos, who went missing during a hiking trip last Saturday, May 4th, at Lamingo Dam area, has been discovered.

Contrary to previous information, the hike was organized by the University’s Faculty of Education as part of the activities to commemorate NUESA Week and the final year brethrens (FYB). The body was laid to rest today.

CURRICULUM

All students must successfully complete the core curriculum before advancing the specific program requirements for their degree. The core curriculum is a comprehensive interdisciplinary program of study for all first year master’s and doctoral students in the biomedical science programs. The goal of the core curriculum is to provide a broad foundation in biomedical sciences and serve as a framework for advanced study in more specialized areas.

In addition to the core curriculum and other required courses, in the first year, student must complete the research laboratory rotations. These research rotations give students the opportunities to obtain broad research training and help them select a thesis research advisor by the end of the first twelve months. In the second year, students begin thesis research and take several advanced courses, tailored to the students’ individual interests.

The Molecular & Cell Biology & Genetics programoffers a weekly seminar series with invited external and internal speakers who address the program’s broad research interests. Journal Club members meet weekly in an informal setting to present results of interest from the current literature.

In the Molecular & Cell Biology & Genetics Master’s program, the focus is on strengthening the student’s grasp of

providing knowledge of research methods available in the fast-expanding field. The program offers both a thesis-based degree and a non-thesis based degree tracks. In the thesis track, MS students will have specific research goals, relating a chosen area of molecular & cellular biology & genetics. In the non-thesis track, students can earn the MS degree by taking additional classes and writing a literature review paper. A minimum of two years of full-time study is required for a master’s degree.

The Molecular & Cell Biology & Genetics PhD program trains individuals to become independent researchers and educators in related fields of studies. The PhD candidates must pass a qualifying examination by November 1st of their third year. During the course of the program, the PhD candidates must also submit at least one manuscript and prepare a second manuscript for publication. The average amount of time required to complete the PhD requirements is five years.

In partnership with the University of Sheffield Africa Scholarship Trust, the Department of Geography is pleased to offer one scholarship for a postgraduate taught student from Africa in 2024.

Scholarship award

The 2024 scholarship offers the following support:

  • A full tuition fee waiver
  • £8,000 maintenance support
  • Accommodation in a single occupant en-suite room in University halls of residence

Eligibility criteria

1. You must hold an offer to study on one of the following courses and register on the course in September 2024 at the University of Sheffield

  • MA International Development
  • MSc Environmental Change and International Development
  • MPH International Development

2. You must be classified as overseas for tuition fee purposes.

3. You must be self-funded to receive this award, ie not funded by a research council, government, private enterprise, charity or any similar organisation.

4. You must not already hold a qualification equal to or higher than a masters. 

5. You must not have already studied outside of your home country.

6. This scholarship cannot be awarded in conjunction with any other funding awards, either from the University of Sheffield or external sources.

7. Your mode of attendance must be full-time.

8. Receipt of the scholarship is subject to successfully meeting any condition(s) attached to your offer before the deadline provided by the Admissions Service.

9. You must have an unconditional offer to study at the University before the 2 September 2024.

10. Receipt of the scholarship is subject to successfully receiving a visa to study at the University in September 2024.

11. You must be a national of or permanently domiciled in an African country.

The Thames Scholars Program is a new program in the Bagley College of Engineering made possible by the Thames Family Foundation (officers, Jerry and Judy Kaye Thames). Under this program, scholarships are available to high-achieving freshmen or continuing students interested in global leadership and who are pursuing a career in engineering. In addition to a scholarship, candidates selected for the Thames Scholars Program will receive financial support for participation in a short-term international project, internship or other travel for academic purposes. The program also provides opportunity for mentorship by faculty and by Jerry Thames. Malaria Consortium is recruiting for a Senior M&E Officer to join our team in Borno.

Job purpose

The Senior M&E Officer will serve as the main focal person for all Research, MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning) activity which include data validation, DQA, coordination meetings, capacity building in data quality and supportive supervisory visit to strengthen health management information system in SMC project in the state. S/he will assist and report to the M&E manager regarding the monitoring and evaluation of project activities.

Scope of work

The incumbent will work as part of the project team under the direct supervision of the State project manager with technical guidance of the M&E Manager and indirectly through the PF-Programme Director for the attainment of the project goal.

Key working relationships 

The officer working under the line-management of the State Coordinator and in close collaboration with the state, LGA, community actors, stakeholders and partners would deliver aspects of the project as per the specified job tasks and expected deliverables.

Key accountabilities (percent of time spent on each area)

Technical contributions 50%

  • Plan and implement M&E activities related to PF- SMC in the approved work plan under the guidance of the Project Manager
  • Serve as the focal person for all monitoring and evaluation related work for the project within the state.
  • Ensure high quality data are available on a regular and timely basis for programmatic decision making
  • Manage the information-gathering process for results and performance reports, in addition to other briefings, summaries, papers, presentations, etc. for various audiences as needed. (I suggest ‘manage the data collection and management processes before, during and after each round of mass SMC drug administration, including sentinel site monitoring)
  • Coordinate the documentation of PF- SMC activities in form of reports and ensure proper archiving of such for easy access and reference
  • Assist program and project manager to develop robust monitoring plans for quantitative and qualitative reporting on project performance indicators.
  • Adapt and maintain a high quality database for the project in line with the regional standards.
  • Contribute to work plans, sub agreements, budgets, pipelines, technical reports, and deliverables.
  • Routinely monitor project performance against targets and prepare periodic reports on M&E activities for PF- SMC Project.
  • Participate in project assessments, evaluations and design including development of survey protocols

Program Management (10%)

  • Support SMoH staff with coordinating program management activities, by ensuring that the recommended coordination meetings hold at the LGA and state levels.
  • Work with the state and LGA Ministry of Health staff to ensure that reports are obtained from all health facilities within the state through appropriate state-specific mechanisms.
  • Participate in regular monitoring and supervisory visits to the PF-supported health facilities, and ensure that action plans are developed for identified gaps.
  • Support health facilities with ensuring that all items in the action plans are addressed and all outstanding gaps are closed.

Accountability (10%)

  • Support programming staff to engage key populations in monitoring and evaluating program’s performance and to incorporate participatory methods into M&E systems in Nigeria.
  • Orient program staff and partners on the basic principles and practices of beneficiary accountability in Nigeria.
  • Support the development and implementation of feedback and response channels to reflect the preferences of community members and beneficiaries.
  • Ensure that beneficiary feedback is adequately documented, addressed, analysed, and utilized by program teams.

Knowledge Management and Learning (20%)

  • Ensure that state M&E and program teams regularly review and accordingly adjust M&E plans and tools in the light of changes and needs in the field context based on monitoring data and reflection sessions.
  • Support learning-to-action events and reflection sessions to systematically analyse data for programmatic use for the state, and to document and incorporate lessons learned into program design and implementation.
  • Conduct regular data review and analysis for feedback to states for program improvement, and for updates to national level (MC and government).
  • Support program staff in key activities including development of a learning agenda, organizing regular learning events, supporting operations research, and reflecting, documentation, and communication of learning initiatives.
  • Support knowledge management systems and practices to gather, document and share best practices with project team, MC country office, government and technical partners. Collaborate with M&E and program staff to develop learning briefs, project bulletins, and other materials for dissemination.
  • Promote adoption of the best practices in knowledge management by other project staff and government partners.

Representation (10%): 

  • Liaise with technical counterparts in the State Ministry of Health, and other local stakeholders engaged in malaria activities in Nigeria.
  • Participate in events/ meetings related to Monitoring, Evaluation and research, including quarterly Principal Recipient and Sub-recipients quarterly review meetings.
  • Actively participate in the M&E Community of Practice and government M&E staff.

Person specification

Qualifications and experience:         

Essential:      

  • Degree in statistics, demography, mathematics or any other relevant quantitative relevant discipline
  • Minimum of 5-years’ experience
  • Demonstrable contextual knowledge of local issues, community priorities, social and cultural constraints and realities related to community assessment, project design, evaluation and implementation
  • Cognate experience in monitoring and evaluation of community-based interventions is highly desirable
  • Experience in managing HMIS and CLMS as well as familiarity with Nigerian public sector health systems will be added advantages.
  • Experience in survey design and implementation, development of data bases and analysis and write up of survey results
  • Demonstrated skills in data management and quantitative data analysis

Desirable: 

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

Oyo Nurses Threaten Indefinite Strike, Issue 14-Day Ultimatum.

The Oyo state council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met in 14 working days.

The council in a letter addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday, May 2, 2024, stated that the resolution was made after its state executive council meeting held on Tuesday on issues affecting the welfare and career progression of nurses working with the state government.

The letter titled, ‘Notification of 14 days ultimatum,’ was signed by the council’s Chairman, Adeyemi Samuel, and Secretary, Aina Emmanuel.

The demands of the nurses border on shortage of staff, correction of the wrong notional date on promotion letters, and implementation of the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure, among others.
