What Is Immunization And Immunization Schedule Of Children In Nigeria

What Is Immunization

Immunization is the process in which a person gets immunized or made resistant to an infectious disease by simply administering a vaccine. Vaccines stimulate our body’s immune system to protect us against subsequent infectious diseases.

Immunization is a medium in which we control and eliminate life-threatening diseases. Immunization has been estimated to avert over 2 million deaths each year. Its accessibility is obtainable even in urban areas where there are vulnerable populations and has been effectively administered through programs organized by the government.

What Is the Function Of the Immune System

Immunization stimulates the body’s immune system. The function of the immune system is to help our body fight against diseases by producing substances that combat them. The immune system keeps a record of the diseases for subsequent attacks.

Vaccines

A typical Vaccine contains either a dead/weakened virus or bacteria that becomes active when given to a healthy person, the vaccine then stimulates the immune system to respond and build immunity to protect the body against that disease.

Immunity

Immunity is a natural defense mechanism of the body to fight against antigens. Antibodies are part of the body’s natural defense mechanism to combat diseases when the need arises. As you fall sick, your body makes antibodies to combat the disease at that time. These antibodies stay in your body even after the disease is gone to protect you against subsequent diseases.

How Immunization Works

Immunization works by inducing a vaccine through injections or orally into the body that triggers an immune response. That is, these vaccines contain weakened or inactive viruses or bacteria (antigens) that cause that disease, and their presence triggers an immune response within the body. Just as though the person had been exposed to that disease.

Importance of Immunization

There are no consequences attached to be immunized without illness. Once you are immunized, specific immune cells called memory cells take a record of the infection and further prevent re-infection when they encounter such diseases again in the future.

  • Immunization provides long-lasting protection against diseases.
  • With immunization, major life-threatening diseases are preventable.
  • Shingles disease, measles, mumps, and pertussis (whooping cough) in adults are prevented through immunization.
  • Immunization is the only way to prevent childhood morbidity and mortality such as Tuberculosis, Poliomyelitis (Polio), Diphtheria, etc.

Difference Between Immunization And Vaccination

Vaccination is the process of administering (either by injection or shots) a vaccine into your body. While immunization is what happens after you have the vaccination in your body. The introduced vaccine helps your immune system get stimulated against potential infectious diseases after you have become immune to the infection.

Supplement Immunization

National Immunization Days are the days to eradicate diseases, while the Supplement Immunization is intended to supplement the days after the National Immunization Days for total eradication. The idea is to catch up with the children/adults who were not immunized, or partially immunized.

Routine/Schedule Immunization Of Children In Nigeria

  • BCG (Bacilli Calmette Guerin): This is taken at birth or as soon as possible after birth.
  • OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine): This is given at birth and at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age.
  • DPT (Diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus): This is given at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age.
  • Hepatitis B: This is given at birth, 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age.
  • Measles: This is given at 9 months of age.
  • Yellow Fever: This is given at 9 months of age.
  • Vitamin A: This is given at 9 months and 15 months of age.

Factors Affecting Immunization In Nigeria

  • Religious influence
  • Inadequate Equipments
  • Misinterpretation of immunization
  • Rejection of immunized caused by illiteracy.
  • Inadequate Awareness.
  • Shortage of vaccines and immunization supplies.
  • Poor payments of immunization officers.
  • Political manipulations
  • Low self esteem of the officers
  • Lack of mobility
  • Lack of proper orientation

Common Misconceptions, Benefits, And Demerits Of Vaginal Steaming.

Vagina Steaming

In recent years, the practice of vagina steaming has become increasingly popular, particularly among wellness enthusiasts and those seeking alternative health remedies. Known as a remedy for a range of feminine issues, from menstrual cramps to fertility challenges, vagina steaming has captured the imagination of many women seeking to take a more natural, holistic approach to their vagina health.

But what exactly is vagina steaming, and does the science support the multiple claimed benefits? In this blog post, we’ll dive deep into the history, practice, and research around this controversial yet intriguing wellness trend.

What is Vagina Steaming?

Vagina steaming, also known as yoni steaming or v-steaming, is an ancient wellness practice that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity in recent years. The practice involves sitting or squatting over a steaming pot of water infused with herbs to allow the steam to gently cleanse and rejuvenate the vagina and vulva.

The origins of vagina steaming can be traced back to ancient traditions in various cultures around the world, including Korea, Southeast Asia, and America. Regardless of the cultural name, the fundamental premise is the same – exposing the intimate areas to the power of herbal steam.

The steaming process typically involves a special wooden or metal stool with a hole in the center, which is placed over a pot of steaming water that has been infused with a blend of herbs and flowers. Some common herbs used in vagina steaming include mugwort, rosemary, calendula, basil, oregano, and lavender. The steam rises through the hole in the stool, gently enveloping the external vaginal and vulvar area.

Vagina steaming sessions usually last between 20-45 minutes, with the steam temperature being carefully monitored to ensure it is not too hot. Many practitioners also recommend taking a few minutes to sit and relax after the steaming is complete, allowing the body to fully absorb the benefits of the treatment.

Benefits of Vagina Steaming

Advocates of vagina steaming claim that the practice offers a wide range of benefits for women’s health and well-being. Here are some of the key benefits that have been associated with this practice:

Menstrual Cramp Relief: One of the most well-known benefits of vagina steaming is its ability to help alleviate menstrual cramps and discomfort. The heat and herbal compounds in the steam are thought to help relax the muscles in the pelvic area, reducing tension and inflammation that can contribute to painful periods.

Regulating Menstrual Flow: In addition to reducing cramps, vagina steaming is also believed to help regulate menstrual flow and ease premenstrual symptoms. The steam is thought to stimulate blood flow to the uterus and promote healthy uterine contractions, which can lead to more balanced and comfortable periods.

Improved Fertility: Some holistic practitioners claim that vagina steaming can also be beneficial for fertility. The steam is said to help cleanse the vagina and uterus, removing toxins and built-up debris that may be interfering with conception. The improved circulation and relaxation of the pelvic area are also thought to create an optimal environment for conception.

Postpartum Recovery: Women who have recently given birth may also benefit from vagina steaming. The steam is believed to help shrink the uterus back to its pre-pregnancy size, while also soothing perineal tears and promoting healing. Some new moms also report that vagina steaming helps relieve postpartum cramps and bleeding.

Hormone Balance: The herbs used in vagina steaming are often selected for their ability to help balance hormones. By exposing the intimate area to the phytonutrients in the steam, practitioners claim that vagina steaming can help regulate estrogen, progesterone, and other key reproductive hormones.

Yeast Infection Relief: For women who struggle with recurring yeast infections, vagina steaming may provide a natural solution. The heat and herbal compounds in the steam are believed to help restore the ideal pH balance in the vagina, creating an environment that is less hospitable to yeast overgrowth.

Is Vagina Steaming Good?

The efficacy of vagina steaming is a topic of some debate within the medical community. While many women report positive experiences with the practice, there is limited scientific research to conclusively prove its benefits.

On the one hand, some healthcare providers are cautiously optimistic about the potential benefits of vagina steaming. They acknowledge that the practice may have merit, particularly when it comes to relieving menstrual cramps, promoting relaxation, and supporting postpartum recovery. The use of soothing, anti-inflammatory herbs could plausibly provide some relief for certain gynecological issues.

However, other medical experts are more skeptical. They argue that there is insufficient evidence to make strong claims about the efficacy of vagina steaming and that the practice could potentially cause harm if not performed properly. Concerns have been raised about the risks of burning the delicate vaginal and vulvar tissues, as well as the potential for spreading infections if proper hygiene is not maintained.

One of the key issues is that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ that does not require steam cleaning or douching to maintain a healthy pH and microbiome. Many gynecologists advise against the use of douches and other products that disrupt the natural balance of the vagina. Vagina steaming could potentially have a similar disruptive effect.

What Does Vagina Steaming Do?

The primary purpose of vagina steaming is to expose the intimate areas to the healing power of herbal steam. Advocates of the practice believe that this steam can provide a range of benefits, including:

Cleansing and Detoxification: The heat and herbal compounds in the steam are thought to help flush out built-up toxins, bacteria, and other impurities from the vagina and vulva. This cleansing effect is believed to restore balance and promote optimal vaginal health.

Improved Circulation: Vagina steaming is said to increase blood flow to the pelvic region, which can help nourish the tissues and promote healing. The improved circulation may also play a role in regulating menstrual cycles and relieving cramps.

Relaxation and Stress Relief: Many women report a sense of deep relaxation and stress relief after a vagina steaming session. The combination of heat, herbal aromas, and the ritual nature of the practice is thought to have a calming effect on both the body and mind.

Hormone Regulation: As mentioned earlier, the herbs used in vagina steaming are often selected for their ability to help balance reproductive hormones. By exposing the intimate areas to these phytonutrients, the practice may help regulate estrogen, progesterone, and other key hormones.

Easing Discomfort: For women dealing with issues like menstrual cramps, vaginal dryness, or postpartum discomfort, the steam is believed to have a soothing and anti-inflammatory effect that can provide relief.

It’s important to note that the specific effects of vagina steaming can vary depending on the individual, the herbs used, and the way the practice is performed. Some women may experience dramatic benefits, while others may not notice much difference. As with any alternative therapy, it’s crucial to approach vagina steaming with an open but cautious mindset and to consult with a healthcare provider before trying it.

Vagina Steaming Herbs

The specific herbs used in vagina steaming can vary, but there are several that are commonly incorporated into these treatments. Here are some of the most popular herbs used in vagina steaming:

• Mugwort

• Rosemary

• Basil

• Calendula

• Chamomile

• Lavender

• Ginger

• Yarrow

• Oregano

• Thyme

These herbs are commonly used in vagina steaming practice due to their purported properties such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, and uterus-regulating effects.

It’s important to note that while these herbs are generally considered safe when used, it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are taking medications. Improper use of certain herbs could potentially cause irritation or other adverse effects.

Conclusion

Vagina steaming is an ancient practice that has been enjoying a modern resurgence in popularity, particularly among those seeking holistic, natural solutions for a range of feminine health concerns. While the practice has been seen as a solution for everything from menstrual cramps to fertility issues, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is still quite limited.

Hmmm Moreover, healthcare professionals have raised valid concerns about the potential risks of vagina steaming, such as the increased risk of infection, thermal injury, and disruption of the natural vaginal microbiome. As with any alternative health practice, it’s crucial to approach vagina steaming with caution and to consult with a qualified healthcare provider before attempting it, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

The 13 Different Types Of Surgical Instruments/Blades With Their Uses..

Artery Forceps

Artery forceps are a type of surgical instrument called hemostats. Artery forceps are used to compress an artery to control bleeding, basically using handles that can be held in place by a locking mechanism.

That is, they are used to aid and manage bleeding effectively. Forceps on the other hand are hinged instruments used to hold an object that’s difficult to grasp in place.

BP Handle

A B. P. handle is a surgical instrument used to hold and manipulate a surgical blade during surgical procedures. That is, the B.P. handle is normally used with B.P. Blade for making an accurate cut during surgery procedures.

Bandage Cutting Scissors

They are used for cutting and removing dressings, bandages, and medical materials slowly from patients without hurting those patients.

Mosquito Forceps

Mosquito Forceps almost serve the same homeostasis purpose as artery forceps and are multipurpose surgery instruments made to handle the blood vessels and prevent blood loss during surgery. Mosquito Forceps are typically used for handling blood vessels and controlling bleeding during surgical procedures.

Debaky Forceps

The Debakey Vascular Tissue Forceps are designed to serve the purpose of holding and manipulating delicate tissues, especially during cardiovascular procedures. That is, these Debaky forceps are basically used for tissues and play a vital role in accessing the thick tissue in small spaces where the fingers can not get.

Plain Forceps

Plain forceps are used for grasping and holding objects, clamping large blood vessels, and manipulating tissues during surgery procedures. It can be further said that:

  • Plain Forceps as a dissecting instrument is used in the reconstruction of eyelid surgery.
  • These Plain forceps are small instruments, and as such can be handled with much ease, unlike many other instruments.
  • They are also used for the purpose of grasping tiny tissues for treatment.
  • However, these medical instruments can be sterilized and reused for further use.

Towel Clip Forceps

The major purpose of towel clip forceps is to hold drapes in place and to keep the operating field exposed thereby preventing movement or slippage.

Tooth Forceps

Tooth Forceps are a type of surgical instrument that is hinged and can hold or grasp objects. Tooth forceps are majorly used in the following areas of practice:

  • To grasp small sterile objects.
  • Tooth forceps are used in many surgical procedures.
  • Tooth forceps’ roles cannot be overemphasized in medical laboratories.
  • They are also used to hold tissue.
  • Also used for vaginal delivery.
  • Tooth forceps are used in the removal of sutures.
  • Their impact on dental procedures cannot also be overemphasized.

Kocher Forceps

Kocher Forceps, like a Debaky forceps, is a multipurpose instrument commonly used in general and cardiovascular surgeries for grasping and clamping hollow viscera and blood vessels.

The primary purpose is to grasp, retract, or stabilize the tissue. They may also be used to pack or extract sponges, pass ligatures, and stabilize and manipulate needles during suturing.

Sponge Holding Forceps

Sponge-holding forceps are used during surgical procedures to hold sponges and swabs. They are often used to grab, manipulate, or remove tissue or teeth from the body.

Skin Hooks

Skin hooks are used during dermatologic surgery to remove, to grasp and hold delicate tissues during surgical procedures.

Needle Holders

A needle holder is a surgical instrument similar to a hemostat, to hold and push a suture needles when suturing tissues, performing wound closure, ligation and other surgical procedures.

Allis Tissue Forceps

Allis Tissue Forceps are used for holding and grasping fatty and thick/heavy tissues. They can also be used to grab fascia and tendons such as breast and bowel tissues, and to pack or extract sponges, pass ligatures, and stabilize and manipulate needles during suturing.
